Setting out
You're standing at the bottom of the mountain, looking up at its mass. You want to go up; to climb; to take in the view from the top. But the path is unclear. Mastering a language and its vocabulary feel distant, and right now, you can barely find your footing.
Or maybe you've started climbing and felt frustrated by slow progress. You've thought, "the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know." You've even hit the
But you know if you're going to reach your goals, you need to make the climb.
I'll share practical ideas to help you on your journey. But remember, no matter what anybody tells you, there is no right way to learn a language and it's going to be challenging. The path is yours to discover.
Why vocabulary matters
When you start learning a language, especially in the early phases, you can really feel the progress. You learn a new grammar point and it unlocks new abilities. You feel smart, and you feel like you're moving forward.
Well, here's the thing: grammar rules are finite, and once you learn them, you're left with a whole mountain of vocabulary still to learn. The grammar you did learn is effectively useless if you can't understand what people are saying, or can't find the words you need to express yourself intelligibly.
Eventually, your language learning journey will compress to a need to build vocabulary. Setting yourself up to do this successfully will be important.

Watch out for falling rocks
I've already told you, climbing the vocabulary mountain won't be easy. The path is steep, and there will be be distractions—falling rocks—that want to knock you off course. They'll steal your attention and make you question the climb. But don't let them win. This is your journey.
The world will throw everything at you—social media, doomscrolling, invitations from friends, work, family obligations, hobbies. Not that these things are bad, but they can pull you away before you even realize.
I'm not suggesting you should avoid them completely. Life is about so much more than just climbing. But be mindful of whether the things in your life are serving you or quietly leading you off a path.
The best tools you carry? Consistency, incremental progress, and keeping your WHY sharply in focus. They'll keep you moving, especially when it gets tough.
